B.C. is greenest province, but all could do better
In honor of Earth Day, Corporate Knights magazine has released a “report card” measuring the “green rating” for each of Canada’s provinces and territories.
British Columbia ranked highest with a score of 69% — a C+. Ontario was in second place at 67%, and the Northwest Territories came in third at 66%.
But with top grades of C+, even these high-ranking locations have plenty of room for improvement.
According to a CBC News report on the study, B.C. scored particularly well in green jobs, green buildings, organic food, and energy efficiency.
The rankings for the other regions were: Yukon 57%, Nunavut 56%, Alberta 55%, Nova Scotia 53%, and Saskatchewan 50%. Several provinces receiving “failing” grades, including Quebec 49%, Manitoba 46%, New Brunswick 40%, Newfoundland and Labrador 38%, and Prince Edward Island at 32%.
The provinces were scored on ten categories — Air, Water, Biodiversity, People, Building, Transport, Food, Waste, Energy, and Toxics — worth ten points each.
You can read the full analysis, with an explanation of each category considered, in this Corporate Knights special report.
