Following the lead of locations as diverse as Dinamarca e New York City, British Columbia será o primeira provÃncia no Canadá, para restringir o uso de gorduras trans em restaurantes.
Restaurantes, delis, cafeterias, educational institutions, health care institutions, escolas, special events, and bakeries — que é, all food services establishments that require a permit to operate in B.C. — must comply with this new regulation até setembro 30, 2009.
De acordo com o BC. Ministério da Vida Saudável e Esporte, the regulation restricts the trans fat content of oils and margarines to two per cent of total fat and of all other foods to five per cent of its total fat content.

Em outro lugar no Canadá, a cidade de Calgary had previously instituted a similar trans fat ban, que entrou em vigor em 2008. Canada was also the first country in the world to require trans fat content labeling on packaged foods.
