Sa Sabado, Mayo 1 at Linggo, Mayo 2, cities across Canada are hosting “Jane’s Walks,” a series of free neighborhood walking tours.
Celebrating the legacy of Jane Jacobs (1916-2006), a noted urbanist, activist, at may-akda, Jane’s Walks inspire people to get to know their city — and each other — by getting out and walking.
Higit sa 60 cities worldwide, kasama 30 sa Canada, are holding Jane’s Walks in 2010.
Jacobs ay ipinanganak sa U.S. but immigrated to Canada in the 1960s. Ang kanyang 1961 aklat, Ang Kamatayan at Buhay ng Great American Cities, introduced innovative, mga bagong ideya tungkol sa mga lunsod o bayan pag-unlad.
Jacobs championed cities that were higher density and mixed-use but still walkable and human scale. Because of her belief that local residents should have input on how their neighborhoods develop, Jacobs encouraged people to get better acquainted with their local communities.

Nakaraang taon, I took an interesting Jane’s Walk though the Vancouver neighborhoods of Strathcona at Gastown that highlighted those communities’ Jewish roots. Sa iba pang mga bagay, I learned that vaudeville performer Jack Benny nakilala ang kanyang hinaharap asawa sa Ferrara Court building sa East Hastings Street. (Ang Jewish Museum at Archive ng B.C. hosts similar walking tours mula Hunyo hanggang Agosto.)
